Hawaii is paradise on earth. We wanted to share with you some facts about this dreamy region.
Over 130 Islands.
The Hawaii archipelago has no 132 islands. However, only 8 are inhabited: Oahu, Hawaii, Maui, Kauai, Lanai, Niihau and Kahoolawe.
Where does the word Hawaii come from?
The word Hawaii comes from "hawaiki", which means "place of the gods" or "place of origin" in proto-Polynesian.
Animal species record.
Hawaii is the state with the most species of animals, although unfortunately many of them are endangered. It is estimated that 70% of the region's native birds have already disappeared and the few remaining are at risk of disappearing.
Snakes are totally banned throughout the state.
The reason is that they destroy the native fauna. That is why you can only find them at the zoo.
What does the typical Hawaiian flower necklace represent?
They are offered at parties as a symbol of friendship or love. If someone gives you one, put it on immediately. It is considered rude to reject it or take it away in the presence of who has given it to you.
Not everyone born in Hawaii is Hawaiian
To be a true Hawaiian it is not enough to have been born there. No matter how many years a family has been installed there, it must be of local ethnicity to be considered "Hawaiian".
Big Island grows 17 hectares each year
The largest island in the archipelago each year gets a little bigger. The culprit is the Kilauea volcano, which has been erupting for more than 30 years. When the lava it expels solidifies, it makes Big Island even more extensive.
Volcanoes from another planet
The Kilauea volcano isn't the only one. In fact, mauna Loa is one of the largest in the world and has served NASA to simulate expeditions. Before stepping on the moon, the astronauts trained on their lava fields to suit the conditions.
Building no taller than palm trees.
To put an end to this list, Kauai is known as the wildest island you can visit in Hawaii. There you won't find cities, major highways, shopping malls or skyscrapers. In fact, it is prohibited by law to build buildings that are taller than palm trees.
